Position: Library Paraprofessional

Reports To: Building Principal and Assistant Principal

Minimum Qualifications: Paraprofessional Certificate

Hold High School Diploma or equivalent

 

Have excellent integrity and demonstrate good moral character and initiative. 

Exhibit a personality that demonstrates interpersonal skills to relate well with students, staff, administration, parents, and the community. 

Demonstrate the ability to communicate effectively in English, both orally and in writing, using proper grammar and vocabulary.

Supervises:  The Media Center and Students, under the direction of the Administration

 

Terms of Employment: Nine-month position (on school days when students are present or as designated by building administrators)

 

Evaluation: Performance shall be evaluated by the building principal/designee.

 

Job Goal: The Library Paraprofessional under the general supervision of the building administrators and as part of the library/media program performs a variety of computer, clerical, and library duties in a school media center; and provides general information and assistance to students and staff. Also, fulfill duties of student aide as directed by the building administration.

Performance Responsibilities:

 

  1. Assist staff and students to locate and check out books and materials.
  2. Assist in the instruction of staff and students in the use and operation of networked computers, software, and related resources.
  3. Perform a variety of clerical duties, including processing and maintaining library media; entering records and files; maintain schedules for use of computers; library media center; books and related reference materials; and assemble packets and materials for students.
  4. Help conduct periodic inventories of the book collection, materials, software, and equipment as assigned; participate in ordering and maintaining supplies and equipment; store and discard materials according to standard procedures.
  5. Help maintain the physical appearance and ease of use of the library.
  6. Evaluate and maintain the orderliness of shelved materials; shelve books, periodicals, and newspapers; pull and route materials in need of mending, binding, repairing, or discarding.
  7. Supervise the library.
  8. Patrol and monitor hallways, stairwells, toilet facilities, outside facilities, and other public and unsupervised places of the school to ensure the safety and well-being of students and staff and the security of the facility. 
  9. Ensure a smooth traffic flow of students through the hallways, assisting students with on-time arrival to class and to assigned locations. 
  10. Assist with supervision in the breakfast and lunch periods and with morning arrival and afternoon dismissal of students. 
  11. Remove disruptive students from classes when needed. 
  12. Provide supervision for Lunch detentions and In-School-Suspension (ISS) as directed by building administration.
  13. Assist the professional staff, police, and emergency personnel in handling emergencies or disruptive situations. 
  14. Assist visitors with directions and secure proper identification.   
  15. Challenge unauthorized visitors and escort them to exits.
  16. Report any discipline infractions, unauthorized visitors, and acts of vandalism to the Principal and Assistant Principal/Dean of Students. Notify the building administration, police, and/or appropriate emergency personnel of any emergency, potentially dangerous, or unusual situations. 
  17. Notify immediately appropriate personnel of evidence of substance abuse, child abuse, child neglect, severe medical or social conditions, potential suicide or individuals appearing to be under the influence of alcohol, controlled substances, or anabolic steroids. 
  18. Assist other school personnel as needed or directed by building administration. 
  19. Participate in appropriate in-service and workshop programs, as directed by supervisor. 
  20. Promote student responsibility for behavior and attitude by serving as a role model and dressing and grooming professionally. 
  21. Display ethical and professional behavior in working with students, parents, school personnel, and outside agencies associated with the school. 
  22. Protect the confidentiality of records and information about staff, and use discretion when sharing any such information within legal confines. 
  23. Adhere to federal statutes and regulations; Illinois school law, construction codes, State Board of Education rules and regulations, Board of Education policies and procedures, and contractual obligations. 
  24. Perform any duties and responsibilities that are within the scope of employment, as assigned by their supervisors, and not otherwise prohibited by law or regulation.
